I’m more than a bit picky when it comes to hair care. I want my shampoo and conditioner to tame frizz, add shine, control oiliness, tackle my scalp psoriasis, be gentle on my Keratin-treated hair, be sulfate free, and smell nice! Is that so much to ask for?!
For years, I’ve been using Head and Shoulders as a treatment for my scalp psoriasis (an auto-immune condition that causes my skin cells to overproduce and looks a bit like dandruff). While it’s an effective scalp treatment, it dried out my hair and it contains sulfates which aren’t great for my hair or my keratin treatments. And I’d often find myself trying to balance it out with too much conditioner which made my hair oily faster.
Enter Prose. A cruelty-free fully customized hair care company based in New York that made sure I didn’t have to compromise on any of my hair care needs.
The Consultation
I started my customized hair care journey by completing an online consultation. I answered several questions about my hair type, hair or scalp concerns, my lifestyle, and my zip code (which takes into account the wind, UV, pollution, water quality, and humidity in my area).

I even had the option of making my routine vegan or gluten-free. I was then asked to enter my “hair goals” and choose my preferred fragrance (I went with the signature scent). The consultation ended with an overview of the concerns my products would tackle, and a note that the Prose chemists were already hard at work formulating my custom routine.
My Experience with Prose
My Prose routine includes a hair mask, a shampoo, and a conditioner. It arrived in gorgeous minimalist packaging and I love that it came with a set of pumps for easy dispensing. Along with my products, I received a pamphlet detailing my consultation results and my routine instructions, as well as a breakdown of the key ingredients and their benefits.

As directed, I use the mask weekly for 15 minutes before shampooing, ensuring to massage the mask into my scalp for at least 1 minute. I use my shampoo and conditioner about every 3 days or so.
I was nervous about switching to Prose because when I go too long without using Head and Shoulders, my psoriasis flares up much more. But, after two and a half weeks of using Prose, I’m pleasantly surprised to find that it’s been quite effective at controlling my psoriasis and it leaves my hair feeling silky, it keeps my natural curls, and it helps to tame my frizz during the summer humidity.
Customized hair care makes so much sense to me and I don’t know why it took me so long to try it out. Everyone’s skin, hair, body, and preferences are different, so why should our beauty formulas be the same?

This is great! And so informative. I never know which products to use and when. And even when I use color safe products my color still fades fast. I’ll check it out!!
Yes! I’m sometimes lost when it comes to haircare and it’s even harder when I’m worried about protecting my color or Keratin. I love that Prose allows you to customize your formula to address these needs!
I have dry chemically relaxed her. I shampoo and condition once a week and just condition my hair on workout days. Chemical relaxer and permanent color are done by my hairstylist. When I medle with box color I get ALOT of breakage .
Same!! I can’t use box color or my hair gets angry – I go to my stylist for all my major hair needs. I love that Prose is will customize the shampoo formula for those of us with chemically treated hair. My formula is specifically made to not damage my treatment and it’s great!
Thank you for this article! I have scalp psoriasis too. My family doctor and Dermatologist have no solution for me. They prescribe steroids and apologize for not having a cure. Did this product give you any relief?
So sorry you’re dealing with that! It’s so frustrating not having a medical solution to psoriasis. I had good luck with this and with The INKEY List’s Salicylic Acid Scalp Treatment.
