I often get DMs asking how I manage to use all of my products before they expire. The key for me has been organization! I get the most use out of my products by making it as easy as possible to keep track of what I have. So I put together a guide on my favorite ways to organize my skincare!

First things first, take time at least once a month to declutter and get rid of anything you don’t use or any expired product! Expired skincare product can be dumped out and their bottles can be recycled. Anything else can be given away to family and friends or donated. Alternatively, any unexpired and unopened product can also be sold on websites like Poshmark.
Make It Easy To Shop Your Stash
The most important thing for me when organizing my product is making sure I can keep track of it all! I don’t know about you, but when it comes to clothing I’m the kind of person that has a full closet and complains that I have nothing to wear. Part of my problem is that it’s hard for me to see everything stuffed in my closet and into my drawers. So I end up buying more and then returning to the cycle of wearing 5 sweaters on repeat all winter. But I recently fixed that this winter by folding all my sweaters and neatly organizing them on a bookshelf where I can actually see them all grouped together. This makes it easier to keep track of what I have and how much I have. I’ve realized that I have plenty of sweaters and don’t need to keep buying so many new ones throughout the winter.
The same tactic can be used for your beauty products! I almost always recommend displaying your skincare in places that are visible and easily accessible. Treat your skincare space like a store and group similar products together in a way that makes sense to you (whether this is by function, brand, color, or price point). Your goal is to make it easier to “shop your stash” and keep an inventory of what you have and how much you have so that you don’t overbuy.

Utilize What You Already Have
I finally have space in my home for a vanity, but that certainly wasn’t the case in my past apartments. When you’re living in a smaller space, you have to get creative with skincare storage and utilize things you already have.
Shelves & Bookshelves
Bookshelves are my favorite way to store my skincare. I recently purchased this white ladder bookshelf and it’s been the perfect place to store all my products. I also like to place tiered spice racks on each self so that I can easily see the products without them blocking one another. If you don’t have space for a bookshelf, you can also invest in smaller shelves that can be placed on a table or hung on a wall. My favorite is this one I bought from Urban Outfitters.
Pretty catch-all trays are, of course, another great way to keep your products together on your nightstand or dresser. But if you’re tight on funds, use the top of a shoebox as a tray to keep products together.
Acrylic organizers can sometimes be on the pricier side, but they’re a pretty way to store products. And since they’re clear, it’s easy to keep track of what’s in them. Pro tip: check your local HomeGoods and Christmas Tree Shop often – they almost always have discounted acrylic organizers!
Bonus: Organize Those Samples!
As I was working on this post over the past week, the New York Times published an article titled Your Hoarding of Sephora Samples is Out of Control. True dat. But the same rules apply to samples – keep them on display! Seriously. Those samples expire more quickly than you think, so keeping them on display will remind you to use them. I have a small bowl on my bookshelf dedicated to samples so that when I see them every day and I’m reminded to use them. Unexpired samples you don’t need or want can be given away or donated.
That sums up my tips for organizing my collection of product. Fellow beauty hoarders: How do you organize your skincare stash?
